Case Study: The following client presents to your office, and you must provide a primary diagnosis, other conditions, and justifications for such.
Jacob is a 24-year-old male who lives alone. He was recently visited by his parents, who urged him to go to counseling for help. He comes to you with some hesitation but does share that his parents are mad at him. His parents are worried about him.

When they visited his home, they found him to be living in disarray. He seemed meticulous about some of his possessions but ignored others. Many items were stacked in piles and seemed to line every wall of the house. Jacob said he started to feel like he could not breathe when his dad said he was taking some of his things to the trash. Jacob had stacks of newspapers he had collected over the last few years, empty canned vegetable containers that he said he was going to use for a project, and various old board games, some missing pieces and unable to be used. He had nowhere to sleep or eat and his parents wondered where he was able to live in his space. His Dad described the apartment as a fire hazard. Jacob has not been able to have his girlfriend over for about 6 months because she refused to be in the mess. It has caused a wedge in their relationship, but Jacob continues to think that things were fine. He does not seem to understand that his girlfriend is at her wit’s end. Jacob continued to plead with his parents that he needs to keep all these things. Each thing has a use. He can’t articulate what those uses are. He has never had any other diagnosed mental disorder and recently went to the doctor, where he received a clean bill of health.
