Faciilties Management: Captsone Project – John Gallo Ice Arena
This is a capstone project that I started, focusing on the Revenue and Energy management at the John Gallo Ice arena, located in Bourne, Massachusetts. I am enrolled in a facilities management class, and this capstone is focused on locating operational problems at a facility, and presenting feasible solutions with a cost analysis of each solution. Currently, the Gallo Ice arena is barely making ends meet, as it struggles to bring in a steady form of revenue. Currently, it is owned and operated by the Bourne recreation authority, which also owns the Bourne scenic park. This Park is what generates the revenue that keeps the Gallo ice rink operating. Without the money generated from the Bourne Scenic Park, there would be no Gallo Ice arena.
Finding information online regarding Gallo is a bit tricky because it is a small local arena. However, it is adored by the community and has a strong History. I have some solid resources and articles that I will include at the bottom of my paper, and I also toured the facility and have gained some insight on the current status of the facility. Please reach out if you need any information that I might be able to assist you with.
Please Note: I would like you to use my paper as a reference, but I want a new and polished capstone paper with two charts. Please consider using the references that I have, as well as some of your own. I would like for you to compare what other ice rink facilities have done, including the Falmouth Ice arena located in Falmouth MA. The Bentely aren in MA is another college facility that would be a great comparison.
My project dove into a few different solutions, including a new chiller to reduce energy costs, adding events in the offseason, including rollerblading and car shows, and lastly solar panels. I thought that solar panels would be a great solution, and that is the direction I initially went with in my paper. However, after some additional research, I believe the cost would be too high and the implementation would be much more that I had previuosly thought. I dont believe the roof would be equipped to handle the solar panels, as it is an older rink. I think the low-hanging fruit would be to talk about small energy upgrades, like LED lighting etc. There can be multiple solutions that Gallo can take in order to diversify its revenue streams. Please include a cost analysis of each solution, and then choose the solution(s) that would make the most sense for Gallo to implement

My current problem statement: The John Gallo Ice Arena faces critical challenges that threaten its long-term viability. The reliance on outdated and inefficient equipment leads to high energy costs. Restrictions from the Army Corps of Engineers and limited revenue streams leave the facility struggling to remain financially sustainable.
My Current research question:
How can the John Gallo Ice Arena improve its energy efficiency and diversify its revenue streams to achieve financial sustainability?
